Python claims life of pet dog

WHITSUNDAY resident Michelle Grigg is no stranger to snakes - and she wasn't surprised to find out a python had swallowed the family's pet dog last week.

Ms Grigg lives with her family on a proeprty at Rifle Range Road and has many stories of scrub pythons taking chooks and ducks in the past.

She is a lover of wildlife and worked as a zoo keeper for the former Whitsunday Wildlife Park for 12 years.

Last week, she says it was a scrub python that claimed the life of the family's dog, Walter.

Ms Grigg said the family heard barking about 3am and her husband got up and told the dogs to be quiet.

"In hindsight, we should have known," she said.

However, she said the dogs had barked thousands of times before and it could have just been a possum in a tree or the horse at the gate.

Ms Grigg said that after realising the next morning that the snake had swallowed the dog, she relocated the snake to at least 20km away from her property.

"I've relocated them closer before and they have come back," she said.

Ms Grigg said she would never kill a python.

"They do more good than harm," she said.

She has reported that just three days later, a scrub python got into her secure chook pen and ate a very large rooster.

"That was only 20 metres from my front door," she said.
