QSL visits Proserpine ahead of February price nomination date

QUEENSLAND Sugar Limited's Dougall Lodge has described Proserpine as a "critical" region to QSL.

Speaking in the town today, the QSL representative also took the opportunity to reassure the growers present - many of whom are holding out for a resolution to the Wilmar/ QSL impasse - that QSL had been in the sugar marketing game for 100 years and knew what they were doing.

"We used to be the biggest exported in the world and we have many relationships with many end users and trade houses around the world," he said.

Mr Dougall's comments were made in response to letters addressed to LNP leader Tim Nicholls and his deputy Deb Frecklington written by Wilmar boss Kuok Khoon Hong.

Mr Kuok implied sugar was a complicated business and QSL did not have the ability to effectively market sugar internationally.

Mr Dougall said the real issue was to provide choice for growers which was a simple idea.

"Wilmar has chosen to make it very complicated and make it difficult for growers to have a choice," he said.

A spokesperson for Wilmar Sugar told the Whitsunday Coast Guardian it was "absolutely committed to concluding an agreement with QSL for the sale of our raw sugar as soon as possible".

"We've met with QSL four times in the last two weeks and continue to make steady progress on the small number of remaining issues and we believe agreement can be achieved between Wilmar and QSL through negotiation," the spokesperson said.

Digressing from the politics of the QSL/ Wilmar sugar stoush Mr Dougall offered practical information on the new QSL grower portal and provided some explanation of recent market fluctuations.

The February price nomination date was also raised during Mr Dougall's presentation to the packed house at the Proserpine Community Centre this morning.

He said the February 28 date was written into the raw sugar supply agreement when the sugar pool was finalised.

"(But) what we are saying is, especially for the Wilmar growers, we will be here for you and work out a solution to enable you to be able to price with QSL if you are prepared to wait for us," he said.

Mr Dougall said regions supplying Wilmar mills were critical to QSL.

"We want to be getting as much volume as we can and providing services to the Proserpine growers is equally as important as any of the other Wilmar regions," he said.
