
QLD ROAD BLITZ: Driver clocked 100km over the limit
A DRIVER snapped speeding at 180km/h in Brisbane’s Airport Link Tunnel was among thousands of motorists caught flouting the law on Queensland roads on the first day of the Christmas safety blitz.
The motorist was handed a $1177 fine after they were clocked doing high speeds in the Airport Link Tunnel in Wooloowin, which has a maximum speed limit of 80km/h.
Police have nabbed 3294 speeding motorists since Saturday as well as 72 drunk drivers.
A 52-year-old Wynnum man was charged with drink driving yesterday after he allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.229 on Old Cleveland Rd at Coorparoo.
Police have been testing motorists for drug use as well, with 41 drivers already returning a positive result.
A heavy police presence is expected on Queensland roads during the road safety campaign, which ends on January 3.
More than a dozen Queenslanders have been caught without their seatbelts on, while 19 motorists could not keep their hands off their mobile phones.
