Driver clocked 100km over the limit

A DRIVER snapped speeding at 180km/h in Brisbane's Airport Link Tunnel was among thousands of motorists caught flouting the law on Queensland roads on the first day of the Christmas safety blitz.

The motorist was handed a $1177 fine after they were clocked doing high speeds in the Airport Link Tunnel in Wooloowin, which has a maximum speed limit of 80km/h.

Police have nabbed 3294 speeding motorists since Saturday as well as 72 drunk drivers.

A 52-year-old Wynnum man was charged with drink driving yesterday after he allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.229 on Old Cleveland Rd at Coorparoo.

Police have been testing motorists for drug use as well, with 41 drivers already returning a positive result.

A heavy police presence is expected on Queensland roads during the road safety campaign, which ends on January 3.

More than a dozen Queenslanders have been caught without their seatbelts on, while 19 motorists could not keep their hands off their mobile phones.
