Racers challenge each other for cup

THE Whitsunday Sailing Club held the third race in its Challengers' Cup Bay Series on Sunday, conducted in light breezes on Pioneer Bay.

Two divisions lined up to compete in a windward-leeward format, which saw competitors hoist their colourful spinnakers over three laps.

Wobbly Boot enjoyed a blistering start, picking the pin end bias to perfection and crossing the fleet on port, to be the first to the top marks.

As the breeze freshened, the bigger boats Treasure VIII and Dehler Magic found their legs and were soon in a close quarter battle for the line honours bragging rights.

After a fast and furious paced race, it was Dehler Magic who managed to squeeze ahead and hit the finish one second ahead of Treasure VIII, in what was a very pleasing result for the crew.

The crew of Huahine meanwhile had a major issue with their kite on the last hoist.

The kite was sucked into the pole topper sheaves proving very difficult for the crew to get it down.

With some perserverance they eventually managed but not without the sail sustaining some damage.

High Tide set a fast time in Division 3, taking the line honours a comfortable and clear two minutes ahead of Anthea.

On handicap though it was Anthea's afternoon, taking the podium win first by one minute.

Presentations were held at the club, where the inaugural Open Mic Funday was being held, with great live music from local talent, making for a perfect end to another great day's racing on the Whitsunday water.
