Raiders go down in first trial

RUGBY UNION

THE Whitsunday Raiders took on the Bowen Mudcrabs at Whitsunday Sports Park on Friday night, but things didn't go their way.

The Raiders put up a gallant effort but were defeated 33-7 by a well-drilled side.

The Whitsunday side put together a side with many players not knowing half of their team mates until they ran out on to the park.

Despite this, there were good signs for the Raiders and their season ahead.

Having struggled to get players to pre-season training over the past two months, a squad of 19 players turned out to take to the field.

Playing some competitive rugby in the first half, the Raiders scored their only try of the match late in the first quarter to trail by only five points at the first interval.

The middle two periods were then dominated by the visitors who put on three tries to extend their lead.

Although the Raiders were beaten by four tries, captain Luke Griffiths said he was pleased with the team's effort.

Following the match he said that considering the lack of training as a squad, there were brighter signs for the season ahead, knowing that the Mudcrabs had already played other trial matches and trained for several weeks.

Anyone interested in playing for the Raiders in 2011 can head to the Whitsunday Sports Park on Wednesdays from 6pm to train with the squad.
