Raiders make it four wins in a row

RUGBY UNION

THINGS just keep getting better for the Proserpine-Whitsunday Raiders, who notched their fourth consecutive victory with a 22-5 home win over City Redskins on Saturday night.

Taking on the defending premiers for the first time this season, the Raiders were far from overawed and surged to victory in-front of a delighted home crowd at the Whitsunday Sports Park.

The Raiders took a three-point lead through an early penalty before withstanding a mountain of pressure from the visiting Redskins.

It wasn't until the end of the first half that the Raiders scored their first try, with a bursting run by lock Brook Cadwallader setting up Roveda in the corner and giving the team a 10-0 lead at the break.

Cadwallader linked up with Roveda again early in the second half to send the Argentine over for another five-pointer and apply further pressure to the visitors.

City eventually scored a try from loose play midway in the second half but Sean Condon was quick to answer and his try 15 minutes from the end sealed another Raiders home win.

The game ended with a City scrum threatening the Raiders line but the pressure from the fresh legs of the reserves kept them out time and time again.

Coach Hemi Taukiri said that he was pretty happy with the comfortable win but is still building on his combinations.

Saturday's win was witnessed by one of the biggest crowds in recent years and saw the Raiders consolidate second place on the Mackay district rugby union ladder.

The Raiders will this week look for redemption against the undefeated Camelboks this Saturday, after Kuttabul edged out the new look Raiders 19-18 in the first game of the season.

A win in Mackay this weekend would hand the team first spot on the ladder and continue the club's stunning resurgence in 2012.

Full Time: Raiders 22 (tries: Martin Roveda 2, Sean Condon 1; conversion: Martin Roveda 2; penalties: Martin Roveda 1) defeated City Redskins 5 (1 try).
