Raiders ready for season opener

RUGBY UNION

THE Whitsunday Raiders believe they are ready to tackle the Mackay City Redman this weekend in the opening match of their 2011 rugby season.

Having played two trial matches in the past month, Raiders captain Luke Griffiths said he was confident his side would be ready for their match on Saturday at the Whitsunday Sports Park.

The game was scheduled for the grounds at Quarry Hill but was changed to be a home game when the away grounds were deemed unfit for play.

Despite not training for the past two weeks, due to wet weather and also falling short of victory in their trial matches against the Bowen Mudcrabs and Hamilton Island, Griffiths said the club was in a far better spot than first thought in the early stages of the off season.

“We've had a good couple of runs,” he said.

“I thought that the second game surprised me a little.

“I didn't think we'd go that good against Hamo.”

Griffiths said both matches proved to restore some belief in the Raiders side after a disappointing 2010 campaign.

“We're just looking for improvement,” he said.

“It's a long season so if we can improve every week then that's great.”
