Rail awards reflect achievements

THEY have got more than five centuries of work behind them in total but Downer EDI employees aren't stopping yet, with workers awarded for their dedication to the job in a ceremony yesterday.

More than 45 employees were congratulated at a presentation at the Bowen St factory, with Maryborough's Peter Hale and Ross Sheppard taking home awards after spending more than 40 years with the train-making company.

Downer EDI chief executive officer Peter Borden congratulated all of the award winners for their positive contribution toward the factory's achievements.

"This year we have built 36 locomotives, which is fantastic," he said.

"We still have 13 trains currently being built and 20 in the planning stages.

"So this places the facility well on track for next year."

Mr Borden said all of the factory's workers should be proud of the work that was completed in the past year, with several locomotives being rolled out ahead of schedule.

A special mention was also given to Maryborough's Stephen Barnes and Gary Cozens, who celebrated 35 years with the company this year.

Awards were also given to seven workers for more than 30 years of service, and to four people for their contribution of 25 years to the company.

After the ceremony the 200-strong group of workers were treated to a hot lunch and afternoon of celebrations at the factory's main workroom.

Mr Borden said he was optimistic about the future of the company, as several projects had already been lined up for next year.

A secondary award ceremony was also held at the Brolga Theatre last night to present workers with their Zero Harm Safety awards.
