Rain halts operation at Prossie sugar mill

PROSERPINE'S Wilmar mill stopped crushing about 2pm Friday after falls of about 20mm in southern parts of the region impacted harvesting operations.

Further falls of up to 25mm on Sunday afternoon were recorded in the northern and north-western parts of the region.

Cane Supply and Grower Relations general manager Paul Giordani said the mill used the forced downtime to bring forward scheduled cleaning and maintenance.

"A small amount of cane is being harvested today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday) morning to enable crushing to resume from 2pm tomorrow,” he said.

The Proserpine mill has now crushed about 627,000 tonnes of cane, which represents about 35% of the total crop.

Average CCS last week measured 12.7 units, which is only slightly up on the previous week's 12.64.

Despite significant delays to the crush during the 2016 season it is expected all cane will be crushed this year.

"We remain optimistic of crushing the entire Proserpine crop by early December,” he said.
