Rain puts crush on hold again

RAIN has again thrown a spanner in the works of Wilmar's Proserpine mill.

On Friday the mill ran out of cane to crush and the wet weather has stopped harvesters from cutting more cane to meet the demand.

The current thinking is that harvesting won't resume for at least a week after the rain stops.

At the Proserpine Airport, 30 and 38mm respectively fell on Saturday and Sunday.

A Wilmar spokesperson said further falls were expected.

"It is too early to know when harvesting may resume. This will depend on the prevailing weather," the spokesperson said.

Proserpine Cane Supply Manager Ron Worth said prior to shutting down, the mill had crushed almost 160,000 tonnes of cane.

"That's about 180,000 tonnes of cane less than we expected to have crushed by mid-July," he said.

The rain has also negatively impacted CCS levels.

"This season-to-date the CCS level average is 12.12, compared to our budget of 12.87," Mr Worth said.

Mr Worth said a late end to the crush season was looking likely.

"While we allow for some wet weather disruptions in our season modelling, we will have exhausted the full allocation for the season by the end of this rain delay," he said.

"The season also started more than two weeks later than originally planned, due to wet weather.

"Unfortunately, that means a later-than-hoped season finish will be unavoidable."
