Rain, storms brought on by looming weather system

IT HAS been a very quiet cyclone season so far for the coral sea, but that could start to change this week.

While the Bureau of Meteorology reports there was no 'significant low' off the coast right now, some computer models suggest a system could develop on Thursday off the coast.

The bureau suggests this would have up to a 20% change of developing into a cyclone, which is within the 'low likelihood' range.

In any case, the system has brought rain and thunderstorms to the Mackay region this week.

It's been a quiet cyclone season so far without a major cyclone crossing the Australian coastline.
