READER'S VIEW: Animals can be victims of family violence too

I HOPE when everyone remembers only the women and children who have been abused and who have died as a result of domestic violence in Australia that they will also spare a thought for their pets that have also been abused and have died, sometimes in horrific circumstances.

Quite often women are reluctant to flee a violent situation because to do so means that they are forced to leave behind beloved pets that they know will either be neglected, maimed or killed as a payback for them leaving the family unit. Sometimes these pets are gifts for returning on previous occasions.

I know of dogs that have had guns held to their head to force women back to the home.

Dogs tied to trees and left to starve to death, as payback.

I know of a little tiny dog, half-starved, dropped off at a council pound in Queensland and the woman telephoned by her abusive and controlling partner and told that if she didn't come back the council would put her dog down.

He underestimated the power of a nun, who secured the release of the dog, and the little dog and the woman are now safe.

It would be nice to see some provisions made for family pets in these emergencies.
