Refused organ donation concerns

QUEENSLAND Health will meet with the woman at the centre of claims Hervey Bay Hospital refused to take the organs of a retiree who died in November - despite the fact the man was a registered organ donor.

When Paul Ryan passed away last month, his long-time companion Beryl Colling said she was shocked to find his organs were not taken for donation.

A Queensland Health spokesperson said these concerns were being addressed.

"Staff from Fraser Coast Health Service are working to arrange a meeting between a senior clinician from the Fraser Coast and Mrs Colling to discuss her concerns," the spokesperson said.

There are national guidelines regarding suitability for organ donation.

While age is a consideration for some organs, the final doctor's decision is based on the patient's complete medical history, including the circumstances of their death.

The spokesperson said organs that are assessed and meet the criteria for donation under these guidelines may be retrieved.

"Importantly, organs which are suitable for transplantation should be viable with optimum organ function to provide the potential recipient with the best health outcome."
