'Remember your loved ones': 13-year-old girl's emotional plea

KATA Bujna remembers the smile she saw on her grandmother's face every day she visited her in the Bowen Nursing Home.

This moment of joy had such a powerful effect on Kata, aged only 13, that she is making it her mission to spread this happiness across the entire Proserpine Nursing Home.

Kata organised Christmas presents for the Bowen Nursing Home last year after hearing about a few residents that had limited contact with loved ones.

"When I went to see (grandma), I could see how excited she was to see me and I could imagine people being just as excited to see their families," she said.

"Grandma told me that most people don't have a family, or a family that visits them, and it was really sad for me," she said.

"I decided to go visit them for Christmas and get them presents because it's a great thing to do and I get to see them smiling.

"I wish people realised they will regret not spending time with their family, one day they will pass away and you will regret not spending enough time with them.

"Unfortunately, I'm speaking from experience."

Kata's grand mother had a massive impact on her life, and she said she would take her memories of her with her for the rest of her life.

"We were incredibly close, she was my teacher and my best friend," she said.

"She was my go-to person, seeing her happy in the nursing home and spending time with her was a great feeling."

Kata sent out a social media post, calling for people to donate presents to help her achieve her goal of ensuring everyone at Proserpine Nursing Home receives a present this Christmas.

She said she has already received an overwhelming response from Zonta and other community groups, as well as an outpouring of goodwill from the wider community.

"I would like to get presents for everyone in the Proserpine Nursing Home, my priority being the people who don't have families," she said.

"I just basically want to see them smile and be happy, it's a really heart warming feeling and it brings back the community together."

People looking to donate can drop off gifts to Whitsunday Counselling and Support, and Real Estate Vision Airlie Beach.

Small gesture gifts, including cards, stickers, chocolates and teddy bears will also be welcomed.

Gifts will be sent out to the Nursing Home on December 15, with all donations to be received 1-2 weeks prior to the date.
