Repeat driving offender jailed and banned till 2025

A MAN with an extensive history of driving while disqualified has been sent to prison and will not be allowed to hold a licence until 2025 after he was caught disobeying the law again.

Rodney Robert Broom, 48, pleaded guilty in Maryborough Magistrates Court to driving without a licence.

Police found the Maryborough man was driving while disqualified while he was travelling along the Bruce Hwy at Bauple.

Due to his extensive traffic history, Broom had been suspended from driving until 2021.

The court heard Broom had endured the tragic loss of his father, brother and sister in recent times - his father died the day after his sister's funeral.

Broom was now caring for his 81-year-old mother.

The court heard Broom, a father of four, suffered from mental illness, including schizophrenia and bipolar and he had issues with alcohol, but he had been a contributing member of society, working as a removalist and a butcher.

Broom had sold the car involved in the commission of the offence and spent his time cleaning and shopping for his elderly mother, the court was told.

Magistrate John Smith acknowledged that Broom had faced a great deal of tragedy in recent times.

"But none of these things justify your actions over a long period of time," Mr Smith said.

Mr Smith said Broom's extensive traffic history meant he would now have to serve a term of imprisonment.

He said the maximum term he could impose was 18 months, but he would impose a term of 15 months, with a parole date of July 3, as an acknowledgement of Broom's personal circumstances.

Broom was also suspended from driving for a period of four years.

Because he was already disqualified from driving until 2021 due to prior offences, that meant Broom would be unable to hold a licence until 2025.
