Report from inquiry into violence will be 10 months late

THE outcome of a national inquiry into domestic violence will not be known until mid-August - 10 months after its original deadline.

The Federal Government's Finance and Public Administration References Committee's examination of family assaults was to be presented to Parliament today.

However, the committee was granted an eight-week extension early this week.

The new date - August 20 - is 10 months after it was due to report on October 27, 2014.

The committee began its massive task on June 26, 2014.

It is looking at the prevalence and impact of domestic violence, particularly in relation to indigenous women and women with disabilities.

It is also considering what causes domestic violence, if Australian policy and community responses are adequate and how the Federal Government can reverse the epidemic.

Domestic violence groups and frontline workers say at least 44 Australian women have been killed by partners or other family members this year.

APN Regional Media, publisher of this newspaper and 11 other regional daily newspapers, has been lobbying the NSW and Queensland governments to put in place compulsory respectful relationship classes in state schools plus domestic violence-focused magistrates.
