Retail giants divide the town

IT ALL started with one Facebook post requesting a Kmart store to open in Cannonvale or Airlie Beach.

Since then, there have been waves of both positive and negative responses to the idea which was sparked by a woman who posted on Kmart Australia's Facebook page last week.

Amongst the support for the introduction of Kmart, came Proserpine locals believing if one were to open, it should be in the small country town.

"If you open one, make sure it's a decent size with decent stuff and for the love of God.. IN PROSERPINE!!! The country stores always seem to miss out,” Nicole Emmerson said in a comment.

A Kmart representative responded to the push for a Proserpine store.

"We are always looking for new locations to bring people our everyday low prices, and that includes Proserpine,” they said.

"At this time we have no firm plans to open a store within that location, however if this changes we will advise the community with a formal announcement.”

Although the chances of a Kmart store opening are slim, the idea seemed to spark ideas for other locals who wanted to see other major stores open.

Earlier this week, Shane Richter created a Facebook page to encourage the opening of an Aldi store in the Mackay/Whitsundays region.

Facebook users shared their opinion on the matter with many believing it was an idea which would benefit the locals.

"Yes, the more we have here the less we have to travel out of town, so sick of having to drive to Mackay or shopping online cos we have stuff all in this shire!” Teena Roberts said on Facebook.

To Lauren Howell, the idea was simply a no-brainer saying "Yesssss finally Whitsundays are getting up with the times”.

While some Facebook users supported the introduction of bigger retailers, others argued it would hurt smaller local business.

"No thanks! Keep getting these corporate giants and we'll completely lose our 'village' atmosphere! That's my opinion anyway,” Debbie Phillips said.

Gab Sta said, "No. Can we stop asking for corps to come and build and start focusing on building a better community that supports our small/local business...”
