Vanguard Report: ‘Hospitals expect sub-standard outcomes’

CENTRAL Queensland hospitals are in a serious condition but were improving, with a review handing down 130 clinical changes needed.

The Vanguard Report, which also reviewed Rockhampton Hospital, stated the hospitals had come to accept sub-standard clinical outcomes.

The consultants found a decline in leadership had been exacerbated by a high turnover of short-term executive directors of medical services, leaving them with almost no influence over senior clinicians.

The review went over recommendations not implemented following investigations into the deaths of patients, and patient safety breaches.

The people in charge of Rockhampton Hospital, the Central Queensland Hospital and Health Board, commissioned the report after becoming concerned the hospital was not using the best safety practices for patients.

But Mr Ware said he did not believe the review would have prevented the latest scandal in which Rockhampton Hospital is embroiled. Urologist Antonio Vega Vega was sacked after allegations he botched four surgeries.

Dr Vega Vega is accused of removing the wrong kidney of a patient, nicking an artery, misdiagnosing a twisted testicle leading to its removal, and inserting a stent in the wrong place.

His surgeries are being investigated by a number of medical bodies and the Rockhampton police.

Mr Ware denied the decision to release the report was made after Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk made repeated calls for it to be made public.

He said the board would have released it to remain transparent and to show Rockhampton Hospital was a safe medical facility.

Mr Ware said the board had now hired a new chief executive and new executive director of quality and safety, and a new executive director.
