Riding for Prossie in the USA

BMX: One Proserpine BMX rider has mixed it on the track with some of the best riders the BMX world has to offer.

This week Vernon Dries returned from riding in the BMX World Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina, United States.

Dries competed in the 50s+ challenge class against 64 riders from 43 countries.

Having qualified for the event last year at the Australian Championships held at the Sleeman BMX track in Brisbane, Dries was initially confident of a good result.

But that was before Cyclone Debbie destroyed the Prosperine BMX track and severely hampered his training program.

In Rock Hill he didn't progress beyond the elimination heats, but said the whole trip was a great experience.

"It was a great all round event and one of the best facilities I have seen," he said.

Dries said in his class there were three other competitors from Australia but many more in other classes.

Canberra's Caroline Buchanan competed and missed out on another World Championship crown by an agonising 0.0008 seconds.

Buchanan finished second to fall just short of the rainbow jersey at the World Championships on Sunday morning.

Also attending the event as a rider support officer was Proserpine's Julie Dries.

On August 19 the Proserpine BMX Club will host an open day called Rumble For Ronald McDonald.

The event is expected to attract more than 300 riders from all over Australia.

Racing on Saturday gets under way from 10.30am.
