RIO 2016: Absolutely Mo stopping him

Great Britain's Mo Farah said he was glad to prove his wins in London four years ago were not lucky after winning the 5000m in style at the Rio Olympics.

In taking the gold on the last day of competition in track and field Farah became only the second man in Olympics history to win both the 10,000m and 5000m in consecutive Games.

Farah emulated Finland's Lasse Viren, who won the long-distance double in Munich in 1972 and four years later in Montreal, to earn his place among the greatest of the sport.

The Brit also won the double-double at the world championships and withstood everything his opponents could throw at him to cement his place in history.

"I can't believe it," he said after the race. "My legs were a bit tired after the 10k ... I don't know how I recovered. It shows I didn't just fluke it in London, to do it again is incredible. I just want to see my (four) kids and hang this medal around their necks."

Ethiopians Dejen Gebremeskel, Muktar Edris and Hagos Gebrhiwet worked as a team and set off quickly in a bid to nullify Farah's sprint finish.

Farah was up to the task and assumed control of the race in the latter stages before a storming last lap secured the gold.

"I was surprised by the first lap," he said. "I thought it was going to be a slow race. They had a plan, they wanted to take the sting out of me but when I hit the front, I wasn't letting anyone past me."

Farah's success took Great Britain to 27 golds and when the women took bronze in the 4x400m relay, the tally of 66 medals went past the figure from London in 2012 to become the country's best return since London in 1908.
