Grade one student gives all her savings to family in need

A GRADE one Yarrilee student has donated all of her savings of two dollars and five cents to help the pay for Tyler Rostedt's life-saving brain surgery, which could cost up to $100,000.

"I'm just so overwhelmed with how beautiful people are," Tyler's mum Leanne Rostedt said.

"I've got a book of all the donations so far.

"I've had a little grade one girl walk in with two dollars and five cents and said 'this is for Tyler', how could you not cry at that?"

So far, the community has raised more than $3,800 for the family through a trust account set up in Tyler's name.

A fundraising concert, Rock It 4 TJ, will be held this Saturday to help the Hervey Bay family pay for an operation to remove a tumour growing at the base of Tyler's brain, as well as the recovery time afterwards.

Tyler, 25, moved to America less than a year ago to pursue his dream of performing on Broadway after he was accepted into the prestigious Brigham-Young University in Utah.

He was diagnosed with the tumour just over a month ago.

Leanne is flying to the States on Monday to be with her son, who is having the surgery on December 10.

She said she hoped to fly him home in mid-January.

"My dream is to have all of my family in Australia on January 12," she said.

"So [Tyler] can meet his new niece- our first grandson, and see everyone again."

Rock It 4 TJ will be held at Yarrilee State School, doors opening at 1pm and live entertainment and raffles running from 2pm.

Entry for adults is $5 and a gold coin donation for children.
