Rock stars strike gold

NO ONE could call it fool's gold - it's the most beautiful hard hat ever seen.

T.G. Jung Quarries IS the proud recipients of the Institute of Quarrying Australia's Bradken Gold Hard Hat Award.

The shiny golden award is the result of six years' hard slog for the quarry on Coffs Harbour's Red Hill and is a recognition of their excellence in occupational health and safety management.

"We've had no lost time injuries for more than 100,000 work hours," Occupational Health and Safety consultant Michael Newcombe said.

"The real winners are the workers, and the change of culture concerning safety," General Manager Ray Smith said.

The improvements in the quarry's safety standards came as a result of introducing new procedures to a very old, and often dangerous, industry

"We dragged it from the stone age to the modern era," Michael said.

The business introduced new procedures from simple things like locks on switches to more complex induction processes.

There were 20 other competitors in the Australia-wide category and Ray said the reason for their success was, in the end, quite clear.

"It's very simple - this is the result of bloody hard work," he said.
