Rockets launch at Wild Ones

A LOT of kids dream of being able to launch their own rockets and last Thursday that's exactly what the Whitsundays' Wild Ones adventure group got to do.

The rocket launch was the brainchild of Lisa and Chris Phillips, who came up with the concept of designing their own rockets.

Around 50 Wild Ones saved all their empty 1.25L plastic bottles to be able to create their rockets for an air compressed launch.

As part of their creation, they cut out fins and cones and painted them.

Founder of the group, Ron Petterson, said while they seemed like fun activities, there was also a large educational component behind their creations.

"It's about trying to develop skill sets, even though they seem fun, there's more behind what they're trying to teach them," he said.

"It was a really good night. It was an educational night. It was about air pressure and how pressure builds up and it was also about constructing and building.

"More importantly it was about fun. The kids were trying to catch them.

"They were really excited. They make quite a loud noise."

The night was also about teamwork, with the juniors (8-10) launching the rockets and the seniors (11 and over) helping with the launch.

The seniors also continued planning for their part in the Reef Festival Parade.

The night wrapped up Wild Ones' meetings for the term. They will return on the first Thursday of next term.

Mr Petterson said there was still room available in the junior section if anyone aged 8-10 wanted to join.
