Rocky farewells dedicated SES and Brass Band member

WHETHER it was playing in the Rockhampton Brass Band or co-ordinating the Rockhampton SES, Lyle Dobbs dedicated his life to the Central Queensland community.

On Friday, CQ lost a true community hero when Lyle passed away, aged 74.

Rockhampton SES local controller Eddie Cowie said Lyle would be remembered as a man with a heart of gold and of many talents and roles within the community.

"The loss of Lyle really is a whole community loss," Mr Cowie said.

"Lyle was a founding member of the Rockhampton State Emergency Service in 1975 and celebrated 40 years of service to the SES this year.

"In 1991, Lyle co-ordinated the response and recovery to one of Rockhampton's largest floods.

"He was still heavily involved in the administration side of the SES including the Cyclone Marcia response and recovery."

Mr Cowie said when Lyle wasn't volunteering with the SES, he was helping The Salvation Army, playing in the Rockhampton Brass Band and testing out his broadcast skills with the local Amateur Radio Club.

While Lyle dedicated much of his life to helping those in need, Mr Cowie said his family always came first.

"He was very family driven," Mr Cowie said.

"Rockhampton SES extends our most sincere condolences to Lyle's wife Margaret and family."

A funeral service will be held for Lyle at 2pm on Thursday at The Salvation Army Hall in Park St, North Rockhampton.

The SES will form a guard of honour for Lyle.
