Roddick hurdle awaits Tomic

FORMER champion Andy Roddick reckons Bernard Tomic is a star of the future but he will be looking to put an end to the Australian youngster's involvement in the US Open after the Gold Coaster booked a second-round date with the former champion.

Tomic overcame the New York heat, a lacklustre start and an opponet who never gave up, to beat Argentine claycourt specialist Carlos Berlocq 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4.

The unseeded Tomic was off colour in the first set and had to call on ATP trainers to give him assistance as the Flushing Meadows weather took its toll.

But he fought back to set up a first-ever meeting with Roddick who had earlier advanced with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 success over young countryman Rhyne Williams.

Contesting his third US Open after winning the junior championship in 2009, Tomic has yet to venture beyond the second round of the men's event.

But Roddick predicts a bright future for Tomic but is determined to end his New York run.

"He's very talented," said Roddick, the 2003 champion who is possibly playing his home grand slam for the final time.

"He's played well.

"I think now he's dealing with playing well on a consistent basis.

"I think that's the next step for him.

"Hopefully we can delay the process a week."

Tomic is the fifth Australian in both the men's and women's singles to make it through to round two.

Lleyton Hewitt was playing his first-round match this morning (AEST) against unseeded German Tobias Kamke.

There were a couple of shocks on day two with former world No.1 and eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki losing 6-2, 6-2 to Romania's Irina-Carmelia Begu, the world No. 96.

Also in the women's first round former French Open champion and 22nd seed Francesca Schiavone went down to American Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-4.
