Romancing the phone

FORGET video killed the radio star; technology has killed the first date.

CQUniversity student Kate, who has been with her boyfriend for three years, spent the first six months of her relationship texting.

"I was in Mackay and he was here in Rockhampton so we just texted each other all the time," she said.

For Kate and her friends Cassie and Candice, life without a mobile phone would be impossible.

The girls rely on text messages for just about everything, from confirming their appointments to dealing with their love lives.

A recent survey conducted by GAME Australia found that in the wake of 'digital dating', Gen Y have become a bunch of commitment-phobes, with almost one in ten never breaking up with their latest squeeze in person.

But it's not just text messaging that has taken over dating.

GAME Australia has launched a new concept called GAME Swinging, which mixes video games with dating .

"The concept of GAME Swinging moves beyond the wildest imagination of Australia's gaming industry - it's never been done here or anywhere else in the world," said managing director of GAME Australia Paul Yardley.

The controversial new craze allows guys and girls to trade in their video games and playing partner.

"At the end of the night, a new game may not be all they're taking home," said Mr Yardley.

He said the concept was simply giving Gen Y a no-strings attached dating experience.

But with young people like Kate managing to hang on to a long-term partner, romance just might survive.

GAME SWINGING RULES

  • You must be over 18 years
  • Players must bring a video game to trade
  • Players can stay at a gaming station with a partner for 10 minutes
