Roo shooters could be prosecuted

SHOOTERS who slaughtered more than 20 kangaroos on a Booral property last weekend could be fined thousands of dollars.

The Department of Environment and Resource Management has launched an investigation into the shootings which rattled the tight-knit community surrounding the acreage where the killing spree took place.

Many of the kangaroos killed were females carrying joeys, some of which were shot at point blank range.

While the owner of the land said the shooters had permission to camp on his land, DERM's Clive Cook told AAP that it was an offence to kill or injure a protected animal without a permit.

He said the maximum penalty for deliberately killing a kangaroo without an authority was $10,000.

The bloodied animals were found strewn across the property backing onto Wheeley Rd by horse riders on Sunday morning.

Many were named and treated as pets by residents in the area.
