RUGBY LEAGUE: CQ Capras coach Kim Williams liked what he saw in Gladstone trio Jyde Dwyer, Tyson White and Ryan Flintham against Townsville Blackhawks in Mackay on Saturday night.

Both Dwyer and White started at left and right second row respectively and the pair played for 60-minutes while the younger Flintham impressed at five-eighth in a 40-minute stint.

Despite the loss in which a poor first-half set up a 36-point lead for the Blackhawks, Williams said Dwyer and White will press for round one selection.

"They were all pretty good and both Jyde and Tyson were solid defensively," he said.

The first half-was the biggest disappointment, but Williams said the team tightened up to outscore its fancied opponents 8-4 in the second half.

"We allowed too many offloads and it's a little improvement area for probably all our forwards including both of those two, but I thought they both did our jobs pretty well.

"Their work-rate was pretty solid and both made pretty high tackle counts and also carried the ball effectively quite a few times."

Williams was full of praise of Flintham who has had an impressive pre-season campaign.

"He'll go back and play under-20s in the final trial, but he's a player I've got full confidence in if I need to call on him any time soon or any time during the season," he said.

"I know he'll be able to do the job and I think he's shown in the two opportunities he's had that he'll definitely be up to this standard.

"He put in a mature performance and he talks really well and shows a bit of leadership for a young guy and he's defence is very tough as well."
