RSL to dedicate new memorial wall
A MEMORIAL wall beside the Cenotaph in Cannonvale will be unveiled as part of the Airlie Beach/Whitsunday RSL Sub Branch Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday.
The wall is to honour ex-servicemen and women from the tri-services as well as the merchant Navy who have passed away within recent years in the Whitsunday region.
A special dedication service will be held as part of the Remembrance Day ceremonies by the current RSL president Terry Brown on Monday at 10.30 am.
"On behalf of all members of the Airlie Beach/Whitsunday RSL Sub Branch we would like to extend a big thank you to Tropical Concrete and division 2 of the Whitsunday Regional Council for their kind support in making the wall possible," Mr Brown said.
The ceremony will begin at 10.30am Monday morning at the Cenotaph, located in the Cannonvale botanical gardens beside the Cannonvale state School. A bronze plaque for each individual whose family or friends would like to have a permanent reminder of that individual's service will be attached to the wall.
The service will be finished off by a presentation from WWII veteran Bert (Jack) Payne, who has been a member of the RSL for 50 years. The service will be followed by drinks and light refreshments at the RSL rooms at the Reef Gateway Hotel in Cannonvale.
Anyone wanting information about obtaining a plaque for the wall is asked to contact sub Branch secretary Ron James on 0411 694 774 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
