Rumour mill bags punch

ONE punch was enough to land a Cannonvale man with a suspended prison sentence.

Prosecutor Bernhard Berger said at 8.30am on March 19, the victim was sitting on the front balcony of his Cannonvale home with another man when they saw Robert Alex Vormister, 47, pull into the driveway.

The victim recognised Vormister, who got out of his car and started shouting.

It was alleged Vormister was upset over rumours spread about him by the victim through his partner, who works with Vormister's former partner.

Vormister asked the man to fight him on the lawn. After being asked to leave, he attempted to walk onto the balcony when he was pushed back by the victim.

When the victim turned to his friend for help, Vormister punched the victim in the jaw.

The friend positioned himself between the two men before Vormister left.

The victim suffered a laceration to the right side of his mouth, which required two stitches.

Vormister said the victim was also verbally aggressive.

On March 23, Vormister voluntarily attended the police station where he made admissions. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment, wholly suspended for 18 months.
