Runners rock up to support cystic fibrosis in Proserpine
PUPS, parents, and supporters of a local girl with cystic fibrosis united at the annual Run As 1 fundraiser in Prosperine this morning.
The morning began with a 5km run/walk which was won by Mt Julian local, Peter Moore in 21.03, Wendy Henshaw was the first woman across the line in 22.17.
An assortment of keen-as canines then lined up for the 1.5km dog walk on completion prizes were given for the best trick and the cutest puppy.
Snowy the tiny Maltese terrier won the cutest puppy by a mile, much to the delight of her owner, Airlie Fresh.
Organiser of the second annual Run As 1 fundraiser for cystic fibrosis, Faye Elder has been promoting the event to raise the profile of the disease and to eventually find a cure for the degenerative disease from which her daughter Karli suffers.
She has been amazed at the support offers by the local community.
"It has been a struggle this year, with the cyclone and to do something positive like this brings out the best in people," she said.
"We as a family have a hard path ahead of us compared to what we would have had, but it's our life and it's our journey.
"The best thing about it is the way you get uplifted and supported by people. If you give them half a chance that is what this generation is like. We are all ready to help each other.
Ms Elder said the plight of cystic fibrosis sufferers has not enjoyed a high media profile in the past.
"Cystic fibrosis has been under the radar a bit compared to diseases like cancer," she said.
The event's numbers had grown since last year and to date $26,000 has been raised to try and end a disease that is the most common genetic life-shortening disease among Australian children.
More than 170 people registered for the event this year which Ms Elder said was a great achievement in what has been a tough year for many.
Ms Elder thanked the support of her "right hand" Tegan King and helpers on the day, Trish McNeill and Marie Reardon.
