Sacred service to give Proserpine a chance to pay respects

PROSERPINE RSL is holding a commemorative service tomorrow to honour veterans of World War II and the Vietnam War as well as pay tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for Australia.

The combined service will take place in honour of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in the Pacific and four Proserpine residents will be awarded with a commemorative medallion.

The service will also pay respects to Vietnam veterans ahead of Vietnam Veterans' Day on Tuesday, which marks the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

Coronavirus restricted traditional Anzac Day services this year so tomorrow's service will also provide an opportunity for residents to honour veterans and remember those who did not return home from war.

Proserpine RSL secretary treasurer Ron Turner said it would be an important day for the community as well as veterans.

"These things are important because they're almost sacred because of the sacrifice of their lives that our comrades made in the service," he said.

"We celebrate the military tradition because we also believe in constant vigilance.

"We can do more but we celebrate the ultimate sacrifice made by our mates."

The service will begin at 11am at the Proserpine RSL on Chapman St.

All residents are welcome to join the service.
