Sailing club celebrates 40 years

THE Whitsunday Sailing Club (WSC) is celebrating its 40th birthday and is having three full days of events this weekend to celebrate.

The club was founded in 1971 and operated from the beach until a club house was finally opened in about 1980.

The formation of the Whitsunday Sailing Club helped put Airlie Beach on the map as a sailing mecca.

Forty years later and this weekend is the perfect opportunity for anyone who has never been sailing and wants to give it a go.

Club President Ian Davey said the club started as a group of 30 people enthusiastic about sailing back in 1971.

“And we still want to encourage people to sail and join our club today,” he said.

“It will be a wonderful festive atmosphere so we encourage people in the region to come down to the club and help us celebrate 40 fantastic years of friendship, sailing and good times.”

Live music will kick off the celebrations from 7pm on Friday. Local band Gunna-trio will be playing on the balcony and anyone is welcome to come down and enjoy the sunset and party atmosphere.

There will be boats available on Saturday and Sunday ranging from off-beach dinghies to mono and multi-hull keel boats.

Cynaphobe, one of Australia's fastest racing catamarans, will also be on the pontoon and available to sail for the true adventurers.

You don't need to have experience in sailing because there will be plenty of club members on hand to show you the ropes.

The formal celebration will take place on Saturday, March 26 with an invitation-only dinner in the clubhouse.

Visitors are welcome for social drinks downstairs from 3pm.

Sunday is a Family Fun Day from 10am-4pm which is a free community event.

Many of the WSC members will have their yachts available for the public to try their luck.

Skippers will also be taking guests out for a one hour sail to Pioneer Bay.

A barbecue and bar will be operating downstairs and the Galley Bistro will be serving its regular Sunday menu for lunch and dinner.

The event is safe, fun and free for all the family.

All you need to do is bring a hat and some sunscreen.
