IN A final hit-out before the opening match of the 2017 AFL season, clubs from across the region gathered to take part in the Mackay juniors pre-season carnival at Zeolla Park at the weekend.

Competition and club development manager Paul Scullie said the day was a huge success with several teams going undefeated throughout the whole competition.

"The North Mackay Saints U17s scored some comfortable wins in each of their matches, although they were pushed by a determined Mackay Magpies outfit, who although under-manned showed some great desperation to only go down by 10 points,” Scullie said.

"It was also fantastic to see the return of the Bakers Creek Under 17s, who had not fielded a side in a long while in this age group and continued to show the depth of juniors coming through the Southern Mackay region.”

The Under 14s was a similar story, with the North Mackay Saints again remaining undefeated throughout their matches.

"They would run out eventual premiers, without a side scoring against them throughout the carnival,” Scullie said.

"Also, despite the loss of their senior team, the Moranbah Bulldogs had excellent junior numbers represented throughout the day and that was no exception with the Under 14s.

"And it was the Pioneer Power who prevailed in the under 12 age group, after going through the carnival undefeated, with some strong performances in each of their three matches.”

According to Mr Scullie, there was some great individual performances throughout the day, but what impressed him most across the age groups was the ability of the players to work as a team and move the ball down the ground with a high level of skill.

"That being said, there are still some clubs who are struggling for numbers especially in the Under 17's age groups,” he said.

"So if anyone is interested in playing AFL, please contact AFLQ Mackay via Facebook or by call 4951 0622 and we can get them in touch with their local club.”
