Salvos need Red Shield help

THE Salvation Army is once again marching to the aid of Whitsunday's less fortunate with this year's Red Shield Appeal.

The charity is calling for volunteers to help man their collection stations at Whitsunday Plaza and Whitsunday Shopping Centre from Monday, May 25 to Sunday, May 31.

Salvation Army corps officer Stuart Grice said anyone was welcome to don the red and white and lend a hand from 9am-3pm.

"If anyone would like to help, give an hour of their time or a couple of hours to come sit down at the shopping centre, that would be fantastic," he said.

The appeal raises funds for the Salvos' many community support programs.

"In the North Queensland region we've got drug and alcohol recovery centres, we have Moneycare which is a financial counselling service, we also have a Hope for Life program which is a suicide bereavement program and we work in the courts and prisons," Mr Grice said.

He said people should be aware that Salvation Army volunteers would be door-knocking in the area as well.

"There will be some people out and about at the weekend door-knocking as well, but for the most part we're trying to get the shopping centres covered," he said.

Anyone wanting to get involved should contact the charity's Family Store in Cannonvale.

The Salvation Army is also looking for more volunteers for their Family Store.
