COUNSELLING is being offered to teachers and schoolmates of Little Mountain girl Sophie Bombski, who died in hospital.

The 10-year-old was unresponsive when pulled from a pool at a home in The Dales Crescent on Sunday afternoon.

Efforts were made to resuscitate her before she was taken to Caloundra Hospital and then Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane.

She succumbed to her injuries about lunch time yesterday.

Her mother, Karina Bombski, expressed her grief at Sophie's death on her Facebook page. 

"Our beautiful Sophie has flown to heaven today," she wrote. 

"Words cannot explain how gutted we are feeling.

"We are grateful for everyone's kind words and prayers for our Sophie. 

"We know Sophie will be looking over us and will be looked after in heaven by angels."

Through a hospital spokesman Mrs Bombski said her daughter was a strong swimmer and investigations were ongoing into whether or not she had suffered a medical episode in the water.

Meridan State College director Julie Kornmann said the school community was deeply shocked and saddened by the death of one of its students.

A sign in front of the college read "Heaven has another angel- goodbye Sophie".

"Sophie was a delightful student who was loved by her teachers and popular with her classmates," Ms Kornmann said.

"Our thoughts and sincere sympathies go out to the family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time."

She said support was being provided to students and staff and guidance counsellors were at the school to provide support in any way they could and for as long as it was needed.
