School kids go old school for the day in Prossie
YEAR One school children from the Cannonvale State School's speculation about what they would find at the Proserpine Museum ended on Thursday.
On admission they were given a quick introduction to the displays by museum volunteer Gloria Cowan before the real fun stuff began.
On the balcony of the museum the kids had a go at using an old hand operated washing machine and on the grass Peter Harling gave lessons on how to operate an old push mower.
He said it was "beautiful" to have the kids at the museum and nice to see the children smile.
He did not miss the opportunity to teach the children about the life of Proserpine's pioneers and said it was important for them to learn about the past.
"They got to appreciate what life was like for their grandparents and what they had to do to stay alive," he said.
Inside the kids learnt about the gold mining and cane growing history of the area and even got to sit at old school desks and write on a blackboard.
Teacher at the Cannonvale State School Sara Walton said the trip was included in the children's curriculum as they were learning about things from the past.
"They are learning about toys and transport in the past and present and they are comparing them," she said.
Ms Walton said the experience for the kids has been a rewarding one and was impressed with the museum's volunteer staff.
"I like how the people who worked here had put together little stations to go to because they haven't had that in the past."
The volunteers were able to engage with the kids and answer any questions they had about the exhibits and everyone had a good time.
