School student enjoys the chance to hit the road

ONE afternoon a week just for fun Isabella Fleetwood heads out for an 8km run.

The 13-year-old Gladstone road runner found she had quite a knack for the sport after performing well at school athletics carnivals.

Fleetwood said she found running relaxing and fun.

"If you've got something on your mind it just all clears when you are running," Fleetwood said.

Travelling anywhere between the Sunshine Coast and Mackay to run in long-distance events Fleetwood said she enjoyed the competitive side of it as well.

"It just gives you someone to run up against."

She joined the Gladstone Road Runners four years ago to get in another day of running each week.

Fleetwood's dad Les had been involved with the group 25 years ago and did not pass up the opportunity to join with his daughter when she showed an interest in 8running.

They agree running doubled as great father-daughter time.

"I run with her all the time," he said.

"If it wasn't for her being good at running in school I probably wouldn't have done it."

Even if it did make for added rivalry at events, with the win count between the two so far at 5-6 to dad.

"It upsets her," he laughed.

He said his daughter was passionate and motivated and when it came to running with her "the longer the better".

He said they would continue to travel and enter long-distance events.

"Every year we will try and fit in more."

Although Isabella only runs 10km at the moment, her goal is to run a half marathon which is 21km.


Series win

Isabella recently took out the series overall champion for the 18 years and under, female, 10km category of the Burnett Heads Lighthouse Race Series.

The series comprised three 10km races over October, September and November.

Isabella won all three races and in the first race blitzed the field by 10 minutes.
