Sea Eagles impress in Mackay on ANZAC Day
WHITSUNDAY Sea Eagles players have warmed up for this weekend's season opening clash against Bakers Creek with an impressive showing on ANZAC Day.
Eleven players suited up for the City v Country game at Harrup Park on Friday with the side coached by Sea Eagles' mentor Brett Laskey.
The ANZAC Day clash ultimately produced a thrilling 66-66 draw despite Country, who hasn't won the annual fixture in six years, leading most of the day.
Laskey said it was a high-quality game, but particularly took heart from the performance of his Sea Eagles contingent.
"I was really happy with our boys and I thought they acquitted themselves really well," he said.
"They played in different positions to get the match-ups right but it was a good hit out and we got through injury free."
Matthew Laskey (Country vice-captain), Jack Berry, Mel Harrison, Cody Wright, Mathew Golinski, Jade Derbyshire, Daniel Fletcher, Ryan Dempsey, Luke Somerville, Robert Whitton and Trevor Ritchie all represented the Country team but now the Sea Eagles will hone their focus on Saturday's match.
"We'll match-up well with Bakers Creek," Laskey said.
"We're going to respect everyone we play. They [Bakers Creek] struggled a bit last year but every week will be different with work.
"I've got faith in our 22 and we'll be going down there to make a real contest."
Laskey said pre-season numbers were the best they've been for some time but insisted the team was "a few weeks away" from 100 per cent.
Saturday's match at Bakers Creek will kick-off at 2.45pm.
