Sea Eagles share top of the ladder after close win
AFL: Only four points separated the two top of the ladder AFL sides as they faced off at Whitsunday Sportspark yesterday.
Neither the Whitsunday Sea Eagles or the Mackay City Hawks gave anything away in the clash which was close from start to finish and eventually won by the Sea Eagles with a final score of 7.17.59 against the Hawk's 7.13.55.
The victory puts the Sea Eagles up as the equal top side with three rounds left before finals.
Whitsunday Sea Eagles coach Luke Sommerville said he always knew the game would be far from easy.
"We started off pretty even against Mackay City Hawks on top of ladder, and we knew it would be a pretty close game,” he said.
"We are in a pretty good position for the finals in a few weeks.”
Stand out players for the Sea Eagles included Jared Campbell, Trevor Ritchie and Mitchell Bell.
Nick Proud was also key to the Sea Eagle's fortunes, kicking three crucial goals for the side and helping bring the game home by a whisker.
Sommerville singled out the Sea Eagle's ability to run with the ball from the back as one of the defining features of the Sea Eagle's triumph.
Next week, the Sea Eagles will take on the Eastern Swans in a home game.
Following on from the Swans clash there will be one more home game left as the season nears its end.
The Under 12, 14, 17 and women sides also claimed victory in their respective games.
