Seminar to inform public of DV court
WITH doors closing as domestic violence cases take the stand in court, Magistrate Simon Young believes a lack of information leads to misunderstanding of how DV court operates.
That's why Magistrate Young believed it to be important to hold a domestic violence court public information night to help the public understand how the sensitive topic is dealt with in court.
"It's for the purpose of explaining, to anyone who's interested, how a domestic violence court works, what the considerations are and how sentences are considered,” he said.
"As a result of the tragedies down south, it was clear there was fundamental misunderstandings of how DV court operates.”
Magistrate Young said the session, which would be held at the Proserpine Magistrates Court, was for anyone who had an interest in how the court works.
"There's been a lot of attention lately in relation to DV courts,” he said.
"They are closed courts so people who aren't involved themselves may not have an understanding of how it works and why it does.”
On the night, guests will receive an insight into the court process, the law and be given practical exercises.
"It's not going to be anything overbearing or intense,” he said.
Magistrate Young said everyone had a different view of what was considered "right” and therefore, practical examples of the work process would be given to help the public understand what has to be done to remain balanced in DV court.
As well as being the main speaker on the evening, Magistrate Young said there would be a range of support services in attendance.
Anyone who is interested in attending should contact the Proserpine registrar on 4964 6000 to confirm attendance.
