Seniors padding up for start of 2016/17 season

CRICKET: The 2016/17 senior Proserpine cricket season is just around the corner, with teams set to take to the pitch this Saturday.

Proserpine Cricket Association president Craig Brown said the season would run similar to 2015/16, with Valleys, Souths and the Canecutters, playing in their 30th season, set to return and inter-town games between Bowen and Home Hill slated to be a feature.

With normal 40-over season games to be played every Saturday from 12.30pm, the season will start with Twenty20 fixtures.

"Usually we just kick off with some social Twenty20 games. That's usually how it kicks off and then we try and move into our official comp as quickly as we can get it up and running,” Brown said.

Players are required to be at the Proserpine cricket grounds on Kelsey Creek Rd at noon for a 12.30pm start.

Interested players can contact Craig Brown on 49451983 or message the Proserpine Cricket Association Facebook page, with Brown saying players could be slotted into teams.

Brown also said the popular Whitsunday Cricket Sevens would return this year.

"This year we're trying to encourage more women and mixed teams to participate,” he said.

The two-day carnival will be held on December 10 and 11 this year.
