Sew and Save reopens doors to customers
WHEN Marion Yuskan returned to the Whitsundays after Tropical Cyclone Debbie tore through the region on March 28, she was left in shock.
"We'd seen a lot of devastation on TV but it's not the same as coming home to it and this is home,” she said.
Ms Yuskan fled to Rockhampton after hearing the category-four system was headed straight for the Whitsundays, leaving her Proserpine home and business, Sew and Save, behind.
When she came back, she quickly discovered her home and business was badly damaged, forcing her to shut up shop until repairs were finished.
Two weeks ago Ms Yuskan reopened the shop's doors and said business had so far been "brisk”.
"It's good to be back because it's been a tough few months,” she said.
"I just needed to get back to work and some sort of normality.”
The back of the store, where Ms Yuskan does alterations, mending and curtain-making, was unusable after water inundated the ceiling and caused it to collapse.
"It was mouldy so we have to replace the whole ceiling and check out the roof,” she said.
The main section of the store also fell victim to water damage when heavy rain came down the walls, causing a few inches of flooding.
"We've had to change things around and move the counters so we can fit machines in the main area from out the back,” she said.
"I've had to do my curtain-making at home so we've had to do a bit of juggling with staff.”
While doing everything she could to get the business running again, Ms Yuskan also had to juggle getting her own home back to normal.
But she said opening Sew and Save was her priority.
"The worst damage was in the store,” she said.
"Home, I could live with. Most of the damage to my home came with the storm the next night, which flooded under the house.
"Most of it was superficial so we were pretty good that way.”
Ms Yuskan had her own message of positivity to other businesses still rebuilding two months on.
"Hang in there (because) eventually it does happen,” she said.
"It doesn't happen overnight but it does happen.”
