A 20-YEAR-OLD child sex crime caught up with Toowoomba man Victor Alan Stevensen when he fronted court yesterday.
Stevensen, 84, was sentenced to probation yesterday after using his position as a Sunday school teacher to get a six-year-old girl to fondle his genitals in church in 1990.
Stevensen, who is also known as Vivyen Aelfwin Stavansen, appeared in the Toowoomba District Court for resentencing on an offence of wilfully exposing a child to an indecent act.
He was resentenced after breaching his probation order which he was placed on after being convicted of the offence in 1990.
Stevensen breached the probation order in 1992 when he exposed himself to a mother and her two children and performed an indecent act in front of the young family at a shopping centre in New South Wales.
He was convicted of the offence but fled the jurisdiction before he was sentenced.
The court heard Stevensen persistently committed similar offences in three different states over a number of decades.
He was apprehended in Toowoomba after exposing himself and performing an indecent act in front of two women at the Grand Central Shopping Centre car park on March 23 this year.
Crown Prosecutor Sam Bain said the offence he was being resentenced for happened on February 18, 1990 in Clermont.
Stevensen, then 63, was a Salvation Army officer and teacher at a Sunday school.
Mr Bain said the six-year-old girl was attending Sunday school when Stevensen took off his trousers and exposed himself to the young victim and her friend.
He began fondling himself in front of the girls before taking them to another section of the church.
The court heard Stevensen repeated the act and asked the victim to fondle him, which she did.
Defence barrister Robbie Davies (instructed by Legal Aid Queensland) said his client had been diagnosed as an exhibitionist.
Mr Davies said Stevensen suffered from a number of medical conditions and psychiatric disorders.
He suffered abuse in his childhood.
He is currently being treated by a psychologist, psychiatrist and his doctor. Stevensen is also taking drugs which lower his testosterone levels and sex drive.
Judge Nicholas Samios placed Stevensen on a three-year probation order.
