Sharks regret loss to Brazil
WATER POLO: Australia's 8-7 loss to host Brazil in the opening match of their Olympics campaign has come back to haunt the Sharks.
Australia finished on five points from two losses, two wins and a draw with eventual group leader Hungary.
The Sharks stunned Greece 12-7 in their final pool game, but needed other results to go their way to advance to the quarter-finals.
Brazil had to beat Hungary by at least two goals or winless Japan had to beat world No.1 Serbia.
Neither happened and Australia's mission for a first Olympic medal was over in the pool stages.
"We peaked a bit late in the tournament, that first one was the big one,” Australia's Aaron Younger said. "That was the one that counted.”
