She told her boyfriend to kill himself, now she's in jail

A 20-year-old woman has been sentenced to two and a half years behind bars for encouraging her teenage boyfriend to kill himself.

Michelle Carter, then aged 17, bombarded Conrad Roy III with text messages and phone calls while he struggled with depression in July 2014.

She was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in June this year, after a Massachusetts judge said it was "proven beyond all reasonable doubt" her conduct caused his death.

Among the texts, she said: "You just need to do it Conrad. The more you push it off, the more it will eat at you" and "If you want it as bad as you say you do, its time to do it today".

She was on the phone to him when he died.

Her sentence was suspended for 15 months, meaning she will only serve 15 months of the sentence in jail, and she also received a five-year probation order.
