Silver for Jackson in Mackay 21km run

HAMILTON Island's Steve Jackson flew the flag for the Whitsundays at the weekend, finishing second in the Mackay Marina Run half-marathon.

Jackson started Sunday's race conservatively, conscious of his upcoming 70.3 race in Cairns, before lifting the tempo at the 8km stage.

Having run in a small pack with eventual women's winner Victoria Beck, Jackson saw the group ahead begin to splinter with the early pace and sought about picking off perennial sparring partner Shawn Clayton.

Jackson then engaged in a battle with American track star Liam Mumford, and the two jostled for much of the race. As the course wound its way out from the city, Mumford finally relented heading back towards the marina.

With little time to spare, Jackson stepped up the pace and pulled away to finish in 1:17:47 behind Sunshine Coast-based elite athlete Jackson Elliott.

Jackson wasn't the only runner to do the region proud with fellow Whitsunday Triathlon Club members Kyle Pevitt-Scott and Elli Mitchell also in the thick of the action.

Bowen-based runner Elliarna Mitchell proved she had a bright future in the sport, with the 12-year-old taking out the open women's title (fifth overall) in the 500-strong City Fitness 5km field.

Competing in the DBCT 8km, Pevitt-Scott surged to a confidence-boosting top-10 finish on the back of a personal best 33:21. A final hit-out before his maiden 70.3 Ironman event in Cairns next week, Pevitt-Scott put himself in the hurt locker as he went out hard with the early pace-setters. Recent training paid dividends for Pevitt-Scott, snaring bronze in his age group while Whitsunday Running Club's Mark McConkey clocked 37:23 for fifth in his age group.

Hamilton Island's Annette Pickering and Shane Cook won the 8km events, finishing in 51:22 and 47:24 respectively.
