Snake hides in laundry, lashes out at catcher

A SNAKE catching video has gone viral, reminding residents where snakes could be hiding during this week's heatwave.

The video, originally posted last month by South Burnett Snake Catchers 24/7, has emerged in a Crows Nest community Facebook group.

Crows Nest residents are reporting several sightings of snakes in the area.

In the video, South Burnett Snake Catchers 24/7 owner and operator Christian Andersen was called out to a Nanango home where a brown snake was residing inside a laundry cupboard.

When Mr Andersen goes to collect the snake, it lashes out towards the catcher, requiring him to draw on his professional skill and quickly act.

Mr Andersen is currently working in Toowoomba, helping out local service Toowoomba Snake Catchers 24/7.

They received five calls yesterday to Murphys Creek, Cabarlah, Meringandan and two at Crows Nest.

Earlier this week, the pair caught a blue-bellied black snake in child's bedroom drawer in Southbrook after 9.30pm.

"Snakes are going to be wanting to find places out of the heat, especially this weekend," Mr Andersen said.

"In the heatwave, if snakes are caught in sun, they will die. They don't perspire like humans so unfortunately they find their way into houses, garages and swimming pools to keep cool.

"Obviously the best thing people can do is keep their grass mowed, very rarely will snakes travel through a backyard to get to a house if the grass is mowed because they're open to predators."

Mr Andersen applauded the owner of the home in the video for taking appropriate action.

"This lady did the right thing and contained the snake inside her house and exited after placing towels under each door to prevent its escape," he said.

"I was told I was looking for a black snake but as I approached the laundry cupboard I heard the distinct hissing so I thought it may have been a brown snake.

"I was right on the money and it wasn't exactly happy to meet me but that's okay I don't love them any less and this one was no exception."

The post comes after three snake bites in Queensland last night.

A man is recovering in Toowoomba Hospital after being bitten by a snake on a property at Flagstone Creek Rd.

Another man in his 20s was taken to Townsville Hospital after being bitten by a snake about 8.30pm last night and a teenager was bitten on the foot by a snake at the beachside town of Halifax in North Queensland about 9.30pm.
