Soccer camp offers life lesson
SOCCER: Coach of the West Ham Oceania (soccer) Academy, Liton Zaman, at a recent visit to the Whitsundays admitted not everyone is going be be a premier league footballer.
"What we are trying to gear everyone up with is life skills,” he said.
"Making them a better person in life and whether you take up any different sports we are tying to make you a better person in society.”
Zaman said there were four aspects of the game that the academy focused on.
"Technical ability is one but then we are looking at the psychological aspects of the game: How do you deal with a negative situation,” he said.
"That skill can be used in any part of life.”
Then the social aspects of the game were investigated.
"How are you interacting with other players that you don't know? Who is carrying your kit bag? Is it your parents?”
Zaman said the kids had been exposed to a lot of new things but he got a sense the kids were benefiting form the experience.
"It will take time to pick up new skills but the best thing is everyone wants to learn,” he said.
